VHF Radio - Short Range Certificate including DSC

Whether you are using a VHF handheld or fixed station on a yacht, powerboat, any other vessel or a shore, It is a legal requirement that in order to operate a VHF radio that you must be both qualified and have a licence from the Dept. of Transport to operate a VHF Radio.

Description

The covers the training and assessment required to obtain a Short Range Certificate and is accredited by the Irish Department of Transport.

The course covers the different uses of a VHF in the maritime world. You will learn the rules and regulations governing radiotelephony, how to assess different situations where a VHF is used and how to operate the VHF to make these calls. The course also extensively covers the use of Digital Selective Calling (DSC).

The course covers the all the required training for the assessment in:

Types of Communications in the Maritime Mobile Service
Types of Stations in the Maritime Mobile Service
Radio Frequencies and Channels
Functionality of Ship Station Equipment
Basic controls and usage of VHF radio
VHF antennas Purpose and use of Digital Selective Calling (DSC)
Search and Rescue Procedures (SAR)
Distress, Urgency and Safety Communications in GMDSS
Maritime Safety Information (MSI)
Alerting and Location Signals
Operational procedures and regulations for VHF Communications in regards to Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS)
The rules and regulations relating to the use of VHF radio

On completion of the course you will be assessed by an external Dept. of Transport examiner on the day.

The course fee includes the Dept. of Transport certification fee and the Dept. of Transport examiners fee necessary to receive your SRC.

Perquisites

You will be provided with some course material in advance so some pre-course study will be required

Duration

This course will take place on the Friday evening 6pm to 9pm (approx.) and all all day Saturday

PHECC Certified First Aid Course

Overview

This one day (8 hours) First Aid Response course is a PHECC approved course and recommended by Irish Sailing.

The course also covers First Aid at Sea.

The course is given by Olivia Byrne from the RNLI

The course will take place at our training center at the Galway Bay Sailing Club in Rinville.

This one day RYA certified Diesel Engine Maintenance course is specifically designed for skippers of yachts or small marine crafts that have standard inboard Diesel Engines and want to have a better understanding the systems, perform general maintenance and trouble shoot issues as they arise, particular when at sea.

IS Coastal Navigation Course January 24/25

Overview

The aim of this course is to provide participants with the skills and knowledge required to safely navigate a boat by day and by night in coastal waters with which they are familiar.

This course is ideal for anyone intending to take the International Certificate of Competency ICC assessment or Advanced Powerboat course at a later stage.

Whether you're a novice or an experienced sailor, our expert instructors will guide you through the process of planning and executing coastal passages, with a focus on safety and seamanship.

You’ll learn how to use charts and pilot books to plan coastal passages, as well as how to navigate using visual aids, such as landmarks and buoys. You'll also be introduced to electronic navigation tools, such as GPS, and how to interpret weather forecasts to plan your trips accordingly.

On completion of this you will receive an Irish Sailing certificate in Coastal Navigation.

Description

The IS Coastal Navigation Course Syllabus covers the following:

Interpret Weather forecasts, source information and plan accordingly
Chartwork; identify distances, plot positions, determine course to steer and more
Understand how to utilise electronic aids to navigation; GPS, Electronic Chart Plotter and more
Calculate tidal heights
Identify Buoyage at both day and night
Prepare detailed passage plans, using charts, interpreting the effect of tide and weather
Understand and comply with IRPCS

Optional Exams

There is a test at the end of the nav course (the IS course pack is 15 euro). If at the end of the course, anyone wants to also take the theory element of the ICC assessment, they can do so (15 euro for the assessment pack). So anyone wanting to do both, there will be two IS packs at 15 euro each. NB there are lots of common areas in the two assessments.
Also note that anyone who has an IS level 2 powerboat certificate or an IS day skipper certificate is exempt from having to do the ICC written assessment. Note that only applies to certificates not older than 5 years
