Sail Academy for Juniors and Youths
At Galway Bay Sailing Club we provide sail training for juniors and youths. The empahsis is on improving sailing skills through coached sessions. We currently have coached fleets for Optimists, RS Fevas and Lazer 4.5s. Sessions are held on Sunday mornings from September to June with a break during the winter months.
The optimist is a single handed dinghy suitable for ages 7 and upwards. Don't be fooled by its size as this machine when driven properly can be sailed in 25 knots of wind +.
This is the chosen starter boat for young sailors at GBSC and they are divided into Regatta Fleet (beginners); Transition fleet (improvers) and Main Fleet ( Racers).
Our coaching for this group is designed to promote racing and this ensures that these young girls and boys can become as good a sailor as they wish.
Our racing fleet travel to events around Ireland and sometimes further afield. These events are managed by an organisation called IODAI
These are serious events where children between 8 and 15 race in accordance with the Racning rules of sailing
These sailors aged 8 upwards will surprise you with thier skill and ability; strength and endurance all while having the most fun you could imagine a kid driving their own machine could have
Every year, in February, at mid term break, a group of sailors and parents travel to the idilic location of Baltimore in West Cork. Here sailors from Regatta fleet, Transition fleet and Main fleet are trainined by top coaches from Ireland and around the world. It is a fun week where kids and adults make friends with sailors from other clubs, meet for social activities and do long walks and visits around beautiful West Cork, Have a look at the photo album below to get an idea of whats it all about.
The RS Feva is fast becoming one of the most popular fleets for teenagers in Ireland. Its rugedness makes it perfect for beginners yet it is fast on the water and has a spinaker, suiting the more capable sailor also.
